American Classical Academy Rutherford (ACAR)is a tuition-free, public, classical charter school. It is part of the Barney Charter School Initiative of Hillsdale College, a network of classical charter schools united by curriculum and purpose. ACAR opened serving grades K–5 in August 2024 and will grow to K–12 by adding one grade level each year. For the 2025–2026 school year, ACAR will serve grades K–6 and is now accepting applications from new and experienced educators.

Each faculty member is a professional who is esteemed and supported by a faculty of colleagues striving for excellence. The faculty is entrusted with practical implementation of the mission of ACAR: To train the minds and develop character in students through a content-rich Classical Education in the liberal arts and sciences utilizing instruction in the principles of moral practices and civic virtue.

Lower School (K–6) English Learner (EL) Teachers provide support for students whose primary language is not English, including both within the general education classroom and in small group settings. Lower School EL Teachers are also exemplars of ACAR’s Virtues and actively seek to develop strong moral character in students.

Requirements
Primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Developing, implementing, and monitoring individualized plans for English language development
  • Supporting general education teachers in implementing appropriate strategies and accommodations for English Learners
  • Providing direct English language instruction to students in both small groups and one-on-one settings
  • Communicating frequently and consistently with parents about students’ progress and classroom events
  • Continuously improving instruction and content knowledge through coaching, professional development, and independent study
  • Fostering a sense of joy and wonder in the classroom and beyond
  • Maintaining high expectations for both academics and behavior through a commitment to schoolwide policies and procedures and the classical model

Qualities and characteristics of a successful Lower School (K–6) EL Teacher:

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in TESOL, ESL, Education, or a related field
  • Familiarity with best practices in English language development and literacy instruction
  • Knowledge of the classical model of education (preferred)
  • High moral character
  • Thoughtfulness and a love of learning
