Reporting to the Provost, the Dean serves as the senior administrator for the Connie L. Lurie College of Education, providing leadership and direction for all of the colleges programs and departments. The Dean must work effectively with departments, faculty, staff, and other senior administrators to define, articulate, and successfully implement an innovative and distinctive vision for the College and strive to become a national and international leader for education in the 21st Century.

The Dean is responsible for leadership of the colleges strategic planning, student success efforts, accreditation, enrollment, academic program planning, assessment of curriculum and instruction, recruitment and evaluation of faculty and staff, professional development and scholarship/research support, budgeting and management of funds, and the allocation and use of facilities. The dean demonstrates a clear understanding of California and national trends in education and works in partnership within the university and throughout the community. The Dean represents the College and University in community, school districts, civic, cultural, and professional organizations. The Dean also works to develop resources from internal and external sources to further the goals of the College and the University. As a member of the Provost's Academic Affairs Leadership Team, the Dean works with the President, Provost, and other Deans and senior administrators to accomplish the universitys goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversees and develops leadership and planning within the college and its departments and ensures operations with other units are seamless.
  • Proactively supports the growth and success of students within the college.
  • Tracks outcomes assessment and other accreditation demands, exceeding all CCTC, ASHA, and WSCUC accreditation standards and ensuring maintenance of accreditation.
  • Articulates and advocates the role of the College on campus, in the Silicon Valley community, nationally and internationally.
  • Champions scholarship and research opportunities that position our faculty and students as leaders within Silicon Valley and beyond.
  • Create a culture of curricular innovation to address the rapidly changing needs of students in the field of education (and beyond).
  • Develops, communicates, and maintains guidelines and procedures to support the functions of the college, ensuring that faculty and staff are appropriately trained for compliance with all relevant policies.
  • Ensures effective college external communications and implements plans to increase regional, national and international stature.
  • Fosters constructive collaborative relationships with local school districts, community colleges and other external partners.
  • Builds successful, distinctive and entrepreneurial new self-support programs and certificates that serve regional and disciplinary needs.
  • Oversees college recruitment planning for faculty, staff and administrators and collaborates with departments, Organizational Development, and Provosts office in recruitment, retention, promotion, and tenure procedures.
  • Creates an academic community in which a diverse population can learn and work in an atmosphere of respect for each individual, modeling equity and inclusive excellence.
  • Champions effective use of innovative teaching, internships, service learning, and novel pedagogies that promote greater student engagement, learning, retention, graduation, and professional success.
  • Develops and recommends college annual budget, enrollment practices, and new opportunities to grow revenue streams for the college through self-support and doctoral education.
  • Championing and leading college-based and interdepartmental grant-writing and external funding proposals; guides and assists departments and faculty within the College in developing and obtaining external funding; provide regional and city leadership on K-16 partnerships that advance development efforts across the Bay Area.
  • Responsible for effective resource acquisition and allocation, management of funds, and the equitable allocation, development and use of facilities.

Required Qualifications

  • A terminal degree in a discipline represented by the college's academic programs or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated record of teaching, research, service, and/or experience meriting appointment as a tenured professor in the college.
  • Min. 3 years experience in higher education leadership as department chair, director, associate dean or dean level.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead conversations on innovative curricular strategies and develop plans for ongoing accreditation of key programs that are located within the College of Education.
  • Ability to work across programs, departments, and colleges to build interdisciplinary teams over time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a large state system of higher education is desirable.
  • Experience building community-based outreach strategies that involve K-16 partnerships at a regional level.
  • Min. 5 years of experience in higher education leadership as department chair, director, associate dean or dean level.
  • Experience with strategic planning, budget and personnel management, and collaborative leadership of both faculty and staff.
  • Experience with working in a collective bargaining environment.

Compensation

Classification: Administrator IV
Anticipated Hiring Range: $18,334/month - $19,584/month
CSU Salary Range: $10,106/month - $32,441/month

The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
