Job Description

Children and families often experience increased anxiety about illness and medical procedures. The primary role is to help infants, children, youth and families cope with the stress and uncertainty of hospitalization. Provides direct patient care utilizing developmentally appropriate therapeutic play, education, preparation and support. Collaborates with the healthcare team to provide social, emotional, and developmental support during a pediatric patient's illness and hospitalization. Responsibilities include promoting the role of parents and family members as full partners on the healthcare team, implementing therapeutic play to facilitate healing and coping, supporting patients through difficult tests and procedures, developing and participating in outreach and educational activities, performing developmental and psychosocial assessments, collaborating with healthcare team for interventions, educating patients and caregivers, reducing patient stress and anxiety, and orienting, training, and supervising child life students and volunteers. Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, ability to work with minimal supervision, and to work in a stressful environment. Education requirements include a Bachelor's degree in Child Life, child development, Psychology or related field, 600 hours internship under supervision of a Certified Child Life Specialist, and completion of specific college courses if degree is not in Child Life. One year of related work experience required, with preference for experience in a Child Life Program. Physical demands and working conditions include various physical activities and exposure to biological hazards and other risks. Shift is days.
