EMH&T is currently recruiting for a temporary contract Archaeological Field Director to join our team to oversee archaeological projects in the field and provide team supervision.

Summary

The position is based out of our Columbus, Ohio office and the assignment is expected to last 3 months with the option to extend dependent on available work. This position will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and be responsible for directing archaeological projects in the field, including providing team supervision.

The base workweek is 40 hours, and hours worked in excess of forty regular hours per week will be compensated at 1.5 times your hourly rate. The typical workweek will be Monday through Friday, although depending on weather or project schedule, weekend work may be considered. The project locations will be within Ohio and surrounding states. Lodging will be provided for non-local candidates as well as $65 per diem. Selected candidates must provide their own transportation to the EMH&T Columbus office.

Qualifications


  • A minimum of a bachelors degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field. A masters degree will receive special consideration.
  • A minimum of 5 years professional experience directing archaeological projects and supervising field crews in the Midwest (Ohio experience preferred).
  • Must be able to effectively apply archaeological theories, methods, and techniques.
  • Proven track record with Phase II and Phase III CRM surveys.
  • Well-developed organizational skills and previous data recovery experience.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with team members.


Responsibilities
  • Managing fieldwork on cultural resources projects, including survey, archaeological monitoring, testing, and data recovery throughout Ohio and adjacent states. This includes phase I, II, and III CRM surveys.
  • Developing fieldwork strategies and selecting suitable methods and techniques for the assigned project location.
  • Prepare and implement work plans and schedules as well as day-to-day management of the work crew assigned.
  • Accurately and efficiently record cultural resources in the field, operate GPS units with a data recorder and Total Station, prepare site records, and conduct quality control/quality assurance reviews of all digital and paper field data.
  • Coordinate with senior staff on a daily/weekly basis.

The work may be physically demanding and work environment described here are representative of those that an employee in the above-listed position(s) will encounter and must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Use of electronic standard desktop and portable office equipment.
  • The ability to tolerate outdoor weather conditions and be exposed to outdoor insects, poisonous plants, and allergens for extended periods of time (8-10 hours per day throughout the year).
  • The ability to walk for extended periods of time and the ability to maneuver over rough terrain, ditches, steep banks and uneven ground.
  • Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. of equipment/materials while walking across terrain.
  • Intermittent squatting, leaning, twisting and bending.
  • Use of hand equipment or tools.
